The first place award will be for $2500 and there will be additional prizes. The goal is to create a compelling video of one minute or less making the case for smoke-free post-secondary campuses, a cause to which Dr. Nelson (who is also a Camosun alumnus) is extremely committed.

I’m very happy to inform you that our interest in/support of VIATeC’s Discover Tectoria event next month has translated into Camosun being given the Innovation Showcase sponsor spot, which gives us quite a bit of promotion as Victoria’s technology educator of choice.

This is at no cost to the school or the college, it’s recognition of us bringing lots of shiny cool stuff, and interesting faculty, to the event on December 8. Specifically, this is a $3500 sponsorship cost ($4500 for non-members) with lots of promotional value for us (see the sponsor package and scroll down for details).

We will be bringing tons of shiny cool stuff from our engineering technology programs, and hopefully a “Mr. Wizard” type from ACBT to run a couple of “exploding lectures” for kids, as well as bus loads of our students to connect with the local technology companies who will be hiring them. VIATeC has secured funding to cover the cost of buses for our students (as well as those of UVic and RRU).

Throughout human history, engineering has driven the advance of civilization. In the last century, engineering recorded its grandest accomplishments. The widespread development and distribution of electricity and clean water, automobiles and airplanes, radio and television, spacecraft and lasers, antibiotics and medical imaging, and computers and the Internet are just some of the highlights from a century in which engineering revolutionized and improved virtually every aspect of human life.

For all of these advances, though, the century ahead poses formidable challenges. As the population grows and its needs and desires expand, the problem of sustaining civilization’s continuing advancement, while still improving the quality of life, is more immediate. Old and new threats to personal and public health demand more effective and more readily available treatments. Vulnerabilities to pandemic diseases, terrorist violence, and natural disasters require serious searches for new methods of protection and prevention. And products and processes that enhance the joy of living remain a top priority of engineering innovation.

Applying the rules of reason, the findings of science, the aesthetics of art, and the spark of creative imagination, engineers will continue the tradition of forging a better future.

It’s been nearly 90 years since Rona Hatt did the unthinkable.

In 1922, at the age of 21, Hatt graduated from the University of British Columbia with a degree in chemical engineering, the first woman to do so in the province.

The achievement earned her the nickname “lone flower” from her classmates – “a woman in a field of men,” according to the university’s archives. Times have changed and women, led by pioneers such as Hatt, are no longer such a rarity in engineering classes across the country. UBC, for instance, expects to welcome 234 female students into first-year engineering courses this September at its campuses in Vancouver and Kelowna.

Yet, despite a number of equity and diversity initiatives over the past decade, the number of women entering the profession remains stubbornly – and many would say troublingly – low.
